You know that popular phrase that goes, “It could be good to hire ‘lazy’ people because they will always find the easiest ways to finish the task”? It might seem unpleasant to be called “lazy,” but whoever said that might be onto something.
Case in point: if you’ve ever tried using SEO tools like Semrush, you’d know that people could label you “lazy” all they want: but you won’t mind that at all if that meant that you could get stuff done (and in record time).
Not to mention that the output can come out better than expected!

In digital marketing, your print ads or billboards (from traditional marketing) are replaced by your website, social media posts, display ads, or landing pages. Simply, you take every physical content and put everything on the Internet.
Now, with everything happening simultaneously and with various online platforms that you could use, it could easily become overwhelming.
This is where Semrush comes in: this tool allows you to consolidate every process of your marketing strategy in a faster, more organized, and more convenient way.
Semrush is a leading online visibility management platform that was launched in 2008, providing valuable insights and tools for digital marketing professionals.
We mentioned that digital marketing is important to improve your online presence, right?

Here, you can track the performance of your PPC advertising campaigns on Google and Baidu. It’s a reporting dashboard that lets you monitor key metrics, analyze the performance of your ad creatives, and find out who’s beating you at the PPC game.
Keyword Research
This section is very much like the Keyword Research tool under SEO, with some notable differences. The Keyword Gap, Magic Tool, and Manager under Advertising are the same as that of the ones under SEO.
But instead of Position Tracking and Organic Traffic Insights, you have PPC Keywords Tool and Ads History here.
Here’s an example of using Ads History to find ads that use your target keywords:
As you can see, there’s no need to do a manual search using the Google Search Console — you can find the ads for specific keywords right here at less time than it would take you to do it yourself.
Social Media
As social media is rampant nowadays, it’s only right for an all-in-one platform to find a way to help marketers monitor their social media marketing strategies and grow their brands. That is what this feature is for.
You can identify trending topics, relevant hashtags, and optimal posting times to maximize reach and engagement on various platforms.
Whether it’s distributing content or managing content calendars, Semrush provides a holistic solution for effective social media management.
Its suite of social media tools is as follows:
Social Poster
Allows you to schedule your posts and other content to maintain consistency and improve reach.
Social Tracker
Tracks social media pages of your competitors. Social networks monitored are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Youtube, and Pinterest.

This lets you keep a close eye on your own social media pages. Data collected here include engagement, follower count, reach, and other important metrics.
Social Inbox
This beta feature allows you to reply to direct messages on your social media pages without having to leave Semrush.
Influencer Analytics
This is an add-on feature that helps you find and work with influencers to help boost your brand awareness.
This assists you in monitoring your published posts’ performance by offering data-driven recommendations. And with user-friendly data visualization, you can quickly see how your socials are meeting your KPIs.

These tools can assist you in creating and optimizing content that resonates with your target audience.
Topic Research
Running out of topics for your content? Semrush got you covered: it will generate relevant content ideas by exploring popular topics, related keywords, and questions asked by your target audience.
Use these insights to create engaging and valuable content that meets the needs of your audience.
SEO Content Template
This subsection allows you to receive recommendations on relevant keywords and semantically related terms. It will even tell you the ideal content length to create SEO-friendly and highly effective content.
To help you get started, it lists down the top 10 Google search results based on your keyword. And to improve On-Page SEO right at the onset, suggested backlinks are also provided.
SEO Writing Assistant
Semrush SEO writing assistant has a scoring function that tells you how well your content will be received based on what’s currently ranking and how they are performing (based on the article and the keywords you provide).
Plus, it offers real-time content optimization suggestions as you write. As such, you can improve your content’s SEO potential, readability, originality, and tone to enhance its performance in search engine rankings and engage your audience effectively.
We all know that AI is prevalent nowadays, and Semrush is not about to be left behind. Proof of this is its Smart Writer functionality. However, as with an AI tool, make sure you use it wisely and with prudence.

If you want to learn about your brand’s reputation all over cyberspace, you can use Brand Monitoring — an add-on feature.

This tool uses artificial intelligence to help businesses whip up unique and engaging articles that actually resonate with their audience. From brainstorming wild ideas to hitting that publish button, it’s got you covered every step of the way.
What’s really neat? It dives into competitive data and industry insights, helping users create high-quality content that doesn’t just sit there gathering digital dust. And let’s talk about staying relevant—this app can spotlight your competitive advantages and highlight trending topics in specific niches. This ensures your content isn’t just another drop in the ocean but is strategically poised to grab attention.
Trends

Agency Solutions
The features under this category are meant for businesses that offer B2B solutions and intend to use Semrush for their services. Here’s a quick overview of the Agency Solutions:
Lead Generation
Semrush recognizes that lead generation is the lifeblood of successful agencies, and here are the three key tools that it offers for lead generation:
- Agency Listing: This feature allows companies/agencies to showcase their services and expertise, making it easier for potential clients to find and connect with them.
If you sign up for the Agency Partners option, you will be listed within the Semrush directory and get new leads from businesses looking to work with Semrush-recognized agencies.
- Lead Finder: With Semrush’s Lead Finder tool, agencies can identify potential leads by analyzing website traffic, social media engagement, and other relevant metrics.
Agencies can use this valuable insight to identify businesses or individuals who have the need for their services. This allows them to reach out to potential customers with personalized offers, therefore increasing their chances of conversion.
Optimization & Automation
So you’ve found a client that needs help with digital marketing; now what? That’s where Semrush’s optimization and automation features come into play.
This enables agencies to streamline workflows and maximize the effectiveness of their service.
Here are three key tools that Semrush offers for optimization and automation:
- Client Portal: With secure access to reports, data, and project updates, agencies can enhance transparency, improve client satisfaction, and simplify client-agency interactions.
- CRM: The CRM tool helps agencies manage and nurture client relationships effectively. By centralizing client data, tracking interactions, and automating follow-ups, agencies can strengthen client engagement, track opportunities, and drive long-term success.
- My Reports: You can create customized, professional reports to showcase campaign performance and deliver insights to clients. With a simple drag-and-drop functionality and customizable templates, agencies can create visually appealing reports that highlight key metrics, demonstrate value, and foster client trust.
Both Lead Generation and Optimization & Automation features are included in the Agency Growth Kit add-on, which is priced at $69 per month for the Start plan (for Pro users only), and $149 per month for the Scale plan.
Where do I start with Semrush?
As with anything, getting started is usually the hardest part — especially once you see the dozens of tools available to you. But once you’ve overcome this, you’ll find that Semrush is not that complicated.
First off, sign up through our unique link to get 14 day free trial (instead of the usual 7 days). Click here to claim this deal.
Now let’s visit the Semrush dashboard.
Once you’ve logged into your account, the first page you’ll see is the SEO Dashboard, which provides the essential tools for optimizing your search engine presence.
Starting with the SEO section is a great way to familiarize yourself with Semrush. It’s its most popular feature, after all!
By default, the SEO section is expanded, while the others are collapsed or minimized. If you look at the left-hand pane, you’ll find the list of all the main sections and subsections that we’ve discussed above.
Each section is further broken down into different parts that can all be found on the left-hand pane. This allows you to easily navigate through all the features and functions of Semrush.
If you’ll be using Semrush for your website’s SEO, I suggest you start by adding a project. Go to the SEO dashboard (if you’re not yet there already), then click on the “+ Create Project” button.
You will then be brought to the project overview page in the SEO Dashboard.
You can now start analyzing your website’s information or start a Site Audit.
I suggest you visit each section of the platform to familiarize yourself with the various sections before starting anything.
Even though there are a lot of tools to figure out, I found Semrush’s UI/UX to be intuitive, making it easy for users to navigate once they got the hang of it.
One notable aspect is how everything is seamlessly linked to the sections you need. Whether you’re clicking on the left-hand pane or the tabs within each of the Dashboards, you’ll be able to quickly access the information you’re looking for.
If, by chance, you don’t know where you are on the site, you can always use the main menu to go to whichever view or function you’d like to access.
Everything is cross-linked across the Semrush website. So while it looks comprehensive and overwhelming, it’s easy to find what you need.
How Can Semrush Help Me?
As you may have noticed, there are tons of benefits to using Semrush. However, it would be too much to mention all of them here.
Instead, let me show you how you can use Semrush based on different scenarios.
Use Case 1: You Are A Small to Medium Business Within a Niche Market
Let’s say you own a small business. You have a good product and even better customer service, but you don’t know why your website has not brought in any profit for you yet.
You want to see how well your website compares to other similar businesses and see where you could improve on your SEO strategies.
For this, you would want to use the On-Page SEO checker, and you can start by accessing the domain and keyword analytics tools under the SEO Dashboard. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click on Domain Overview and type your business domain.
- Select whether you want to do a Worldwide overview, or choose a specific country that you would like to focus on, then click the green “Search” button.
- The Semrush Overview will display market position tracking graphs and tables that should give you everything you need to assess your domain.
This includes your Authority Score, Organic Traffic, Performance by Country (if you selected Worldwide), and even the Top Organic Keywords that brought traffic to your website.
Click on Compare Domains to compare your website against others. Just type in a known competitor (you can enter up to 3 domains) and see how well your website is performing compared to the other businesses.
To see if you’ve been improving over the past months, choose Growth Report.
And if you want to see how you’re doing in other countries, go to the Compare By Countries tab.
Use Case 2: You Want to Resolve the Keyword Gap
From Use Case 1, after comparing domains, you might be surprised to find that a similar yet smaller business is performing way better than yours.
If you want to know if they are banking on better keywords for their SEO, then here are some steps you could take to get more keyword ideas. With this, you can improve your overall search rankings by bridging the Keyword Gap using Semrush.
- Go to the Keyword Gap menu and type in your domain, along with the domains of your other competitors (you can add up to 4).
- Semrush will display “Top Opportunities,” which are the related keywords you’ve been missing and the weak keywords you have.
- A graph of the Keyword Overlap will also be displayed on the right side of the screen, along with all the keyword details at the bottom (with the corresponding keyword search volume for each) so you can check the keywords that perform well.
- You can click on any of the related keywords that pop up to see the Keyword Overview and other keyword analytics, which you can then take note of and use to improve your website.
Additionally, you can go to the Keyword Manager and let Semrush guide you on what kind of changes you will need.
Conversely, if you want to solve the content gap, then you ought to check how your competitors are doing when it comes to blog posts and pages.
With Semrush, it is easy to find where your competitors rank and why, as it combines various backlink audit tools, SEO tools, Google Analytics, and every other automation tool that allows it to provide a precise ranking of pages, subfolders, and even phrases.
For this scenario, use Traffic Analytics (an add-on feature).
Use Case 3: You Want to Post More Consistently on All Your Social Media Accounts
From previous analytics and market position tracking, you may have noticed that one key area that you need to improve on is your Social Media presence, and therefore would want to start posting more.
Timing these posts and creating more relevant content might prove to be challenging, but you can let Semrush can do the work for you through the Social Poster.
Note: Social Media Management Tools are available as an add-on.
Here are the steps on how to do that:
- Go to the left pane of the default view and click on the Social Media section, then click on the Social Poster subsection.
- The Social Poster subsection has 3 tabs: Calendar, Posts, and Content Ideas.
You can create and schedule posts while on any of these three tabs by clicking on the blue “New Post” button on the Posts or Content Ideas views or by clicking on the blue “+” mark on any date on the Calendar.
- Connect your Social Profile by clicking on “Add Profile” — this gives Semrush the necessary permissions to access and manage your content.
- You can then draft and modify your content by adding videos, images, and text, then click on the blue “Schedule” button. This ensures that you can prepare your posts ahead of time and even select the best timing for your content.
In the future, if you want to see how your posts are performing, use the Social Analytics tool.
Use Case 4: You Want to Boost Your Link-Building Strategy
If you want to go even further and start to enhance your link-building strategy to gain valuable insights, you can use the Backlink Analytics feature:
- Navigate to the Backlink Analytics section within the default view in Semrush, and enter your domain or a specific URL to analyze its backlink profile.
- Semrush will then display the results, which will allow you to gain a comprehensive overview of your backlink profile, including information on the following:
- the number of backlinks,
- referring domains, and
- Top Anchor texts.
- From these results, you can identify authoritative websites linking to your domain and discover opportunities for further collaboration (see New and Lost Backlinks and New and Lost Referring Domains).
- You can likewise conduct a thorough analysis of your competitors’ backlink profiles and identify their strongest backlinks. It is also possible to uncover new link-building opportunities and gain insights into your competition’s link-building strategies.
Through this information, you’ll be able to identify gaps in your backlink profile compared to your competitors.
- Alternatively, you can also discover websites linking to your competitors but not to your domain and leverage this information to build relationships and acquire new backlinks.
Use Case 5: You Want To Maximize Your Advertising Performance
Now that you’ve set up all your keywords, backlinks, and social media content, you might want to try and maximize the effectiveness of your advertising campaigns (if you already have the paid campaigns set up).
You can start your Advertising Research on Semrush by following the steps below.
- Go to the Advertising Dashboard and click the blue “Go to Advertising Research” button. You can also click the “Advertising Research” submenu on the left pane.
- Enter the URL of your competitor on the next page. You can add just the homepage of the website, or if you want to check the performance of a specific webpage itself, you can place the full URL.
- Semrush will then display the tabs for Positions, Competitors, Position Changes, Ads Copies, Pages, Subdomains, and Ads History. You can use this to evaluate how your competitor is doing when it comes to search engine marketing.
The Ad Copies section can be extremely useful if you have no idea how to create an ad for your own product. You can see here how they’re doing it, then use it as inspiration for your own ads.
If in case the result shows that there are no relevant data, you can set up Position Tracking by clicking on the button, and the tabs above will be automatically populated on your next use.
You can likewise set up Position Tracking for your own domain if you still haven’t done so.
From here, you can monitor the performance of your ads and track key metrics, such as impressions, clicks, conversions, and ROI.
Based on the results, you can then customize ad elements, such as headlines, descriptions, and images, to maximize engagement and click-through rates.
There are several additional apps you can use for this purpose, which you can find in the App Center. This includes Ad Clarity, Ad Creative AI, and Audience Intelligence.
These are just a few of the scenarios where you can use Semrush. There is a lot of potential in using this tool, and I can confidently say if you use Semrush, you will not need any other competitive analysis and digital marketing strategy tool!

Now that you’re all excited about using Semrush, let’s talk price. The platform has three main plans, and these are:
Pro Plan
The Pro plan is ideal for freelancers, startups, small businesses, and in-house marketers with smaller projects. It provides essential features such as keyword research, competitive analysis, rank tracking, and content optimization.
The Pro plan is an excellent starting point for those looking to enhance their digital marketing efforts on a budget. It includes 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked, and 10 thousand results per report.
It is priced at $139.95 per month but is discounted by 17% when paid annually, dropping to just $117.33 per month.
Guru Plan
The Guru Plan suits growing marketing agencies and small to medium-sized businesses. In addition to the features offered in the Pro plan, the Guru plan includes advanced features like a content marketing dashboard, branded reports, historical data, and Looker Studio Integration.
This plan allows accounts to have up to 15 projects, 1,500 keywords tracked, and 30 thousand results per report.
It is priced at $249.95 per month. With the annual payment discount, the price goes down to $208.33 monthly.
Business Plan
The Business plan is designed for larger businesses and agencies with advanced marketing needs. It provides access to all Semrush features, including white-label reports, API access, extended limits, and sharing options.
With up to 40 projects, five thousand keywords tracked, and 50 thousand results per report, the Business plan is the ideal choice for those seeking a robust toolkit to support their extensive marketing operations.
It costs $499.95 per month or $416.66 per month when paid annually.
Semrush offers a custom Enterprise plan for enterprises with specific requirements and the need for a tailored solution. For pricing details and to explore the most suitable plan for your business, it is advisable to visit Semrush’s official website or contact their sales team directly.
Free Plan
At a hundred dollars per month for the lowest plan, a lot of marketers just beginning to navigate the online advertising realm may find the platform too expensive. The good news is that aside from the 7-day free trial offered for all paid plans, Semrush also offers a free plan.
This allows you to manage one project with a limit of 10 reports per day. Keep in mind that one report is equal to one refresh, so if you refresh your dashboard 10 times (even for the same report), your access to reports will then be blocked until the next day. Many of the features are also unavailable to free users.
New Functions and Extras
Aside from well-known features, Semrush has expanded its offerings to include a few extra features, some of which come with an additional price, while others come for free.
Let’s brush through the most popular ones.
